Trip Overview

The trek starts from Paro, reaches to the Jhomolhari base camp at Jangothang and return via the same route or by an alternative trail to Paro. In this trek you can view the Jumolhari Mountain View (7,314 M) from Jangothang, which is spectacular. This popular trek also offers an opportunity to see yaks. The highest point on the trail is 4115 meters.

Day to Day Itinerary

Arrival in Tribhuwan International Airport at Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Full day sightseeing in Kathmandu, overnight in hote

Take early flight to Bhutan. Arrive at Paro Interational Airport (2280m) and transfer to hotel. If time permits, we visit Paro town in the afternoon.

Full day sightseeing at Paro. Today we visit National Museum housed in Ta-Dzong which was built in 1656 and served as the watch tower of Paro Dzong in the past. We also pay our visit to Paro Dzong, which is called the Rinchen Phug Dzong. The Dzong was built in 1644 AD. After lunch in town, we go to Drukgyel Dzong. It was built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1649 to commemorate the victory over Tibetan invaders. On the way to Drukgyel Dzong we also can view Takshang Monastery. Return to the hotel and overnight.

Paro – Shana (Trek Starts)
We start the trek from Drukgyal Dzong and follow the Paro river through cultivated fields, tiny picturesque villages and forests filled with numerous birds and brightly colored butterflies. Overnight in camp at Shana. We cover 14 kilometres at a normal walk of 5-6 hours and reach the altitude 2,820m.

Shana –Thangthangka
Today, early in the morning, we start our trek from Shana. On the trek, the trail follows the river through dense forests with a few isolated farmhouses. Then it narrows and closes in and winds up and down and passes a junction where another path leads north to Tremo La. Tibet. We camp in a meadow with a stone shelter. We cover a distance of 21 Km. at 7-8 hours walk and step at an altitude of 3610 m.

Thangthangka – Jangothang
After having food, we commence our trek. Today, after passing a small army post in the morning, the trail slowly leaves the forest line and gradually climbs into a beautiful valley, passing Tegethang, a winter home of yak herdsmen. We will take our lunch in one of the yak herdmen’s huts. Slowly, we head towards Jhomolhari base camp (4,115 m) and reside at Jangothang. We will cover a distance of 15 Km at a time of 5 – 6 hours walk and reach an altitude of 4,115 m.

Jangothang (Acclimatization)
Today we take rest for acclimatization. After having lunch, we will walk up to the Jhomolhari glacier or to the lakes in the opposite direction and come back to the camp.

Jangothang – Thangthangka
We proceed towards Thangthangka from Jangothang. Along the trail, you will lucky enough to have a glance at scenic view of natural beauty and the panoramic view of snow covered mountains.

Thangthangka – Shana
After having food, we move ahead towards Shana from Thangthangka. Overnight at Shana.

Shana – Paro – Thimphu (end of trek)
Today we reach Thimphu the capital of Bhutan in the late afternoon. The journey to Thimphu from Paro Airport is 53 kilometres and takes about an hour and half by driving. Dinner will be served in the hotel.

Thimphu Sightseeing
Full day sightseeing in Thimphu (2320m). Here, we visit National Library which was established in 1967, Painting School or the National Institute for Zorig Chusum, National Memorial Chorten which was built in 1974 in memory of the third King of Bhutan; Semtokha Dzong which was built in 1629 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal and Tashichhodzong the seat of the government of Bhutan. Drive to Paro in the late afternoon.
